Sunday 6 September 2009 by Gouto

The Elephants of Ivory Coast thrashed Burkina Faso five nil in day four of the combined 2010 World Cup and African Cup qualifiers. The encounter was a crucial one for both sides who were aiming for victory to take the lead in the group.

Burkina Faso fired the opening signals when Moumini Dagano came close only to be denied by Copa Boubacar aka Barry. Charles Kaboré then added the pressure but the Ivorians held firm and it was Chelsea star and Ivory Coast Captain Didier Drogba who was more realistic.

Pressure on the visitor resulted to an own goal by Saidou Panandetiguiri in the 12 minute before Didier Drogba’s double in the 48 and 65th minute.

The Ivoirians who managed to wade off a couple of moves from their opponent continued to dictate the pace, making use of the flanks. The game work paid off once more when Yaya Toure registered his name on the score sheet in the 55th minute before Kader Kéita added another devastating goal in 68th minute, just 3 minutes after Drogba’s second, to give the Ivorians a 5-0 victory.

« We have worked hard to ensure we qualify for the next World Cup. The players respected the guidelines and we were playing against a very good Burkinabe side even though we won by a large margin. I sincerely thank the players », Said Ivory Coast coach Vahid Halilhozic.

In his remark, the Burkinabe coach, he said « We played against a great Ivorians side and we shall do our best in the next two games to ensure we at least qualify for the Nations Cup » said Paulo Duarte.

The victory gave Ivory Coast an unassailable lead in the group with maximum 12 points, six better than Burkina Faso who stay in second place.
